Technology
Wavelength Selective Switches (WSS) enable remote and dynamic management of wavelength connections through the nodes of optical networks, critical for cost effective delivery of IP-based broadband services. With WSS technology, wavelengths traverse optical intersections without requiring optical-electrical-optical (OEO) regeneration while providing the flexibility of colorless add/drop switching functionality. Now carriers can easily and remotely direct any wavelength to any port at any time. Additionally, WSS technology enables in-service scalability of network nodes to low cost, operationally efficient, higher degrees (mesh) nodes, improving bandwidth utilization by eliminating stranded bandwidth. And, by integrating multiple discrete functions into a single unit, systems vendors can reduce development time and cost while providing systems that are ideally suited to meet the changing network requirements.
